While Apple is busy sending out invites, Nokia has today announced two new handsets: the Lumia 920 (pictured above) and Lumia 820, the first two devices in its Windows Phone 8 range.
The 920 is the Finnish firm’s flagship device and sports a catalogue of nifty innards, including the brand’s PureView imagining technology, which the company claims takes in five times move light than rival smartphones without the use of flash.
The Lumia 920 boasts an impressive 4.5-inch high definition screen and features wireless charging.
Like previous Nokia handsets the on board camera looks spectacular. An 8-megapixel sensor and Carl Zeiss optics mean if you haven't already thrown away your compact, now's the time.
Alongside the hardware is, of course, the new Windows Phone 8 OS. At first glance its not dissimilar from WP7, but there are a few alterations.
The home screen has been expanded and live tiles can now be re-sized. Also, bundled features such as maps and voice control have been given a tweaking for the new handset.
An augmented reality app called City Lens lets you see information about surrounding bars and shops through the camera and is sure to be a big winner for Nokia.
The Nokia 820, meanwhile, is a scaled-down version of the 920 with a couple of mid-level tricks up its sleeve including swappable cases - always a favourite with Nokia, and the same wireless charging capability.
The Finnish company is already ahead of the curve as, although we've had announcements of WP8 handsets from Samsung and HTC, these are the first we've seen in the flesh.
After Microsoft's decision to cut off current Windows Phone 7 handsets from a WP8 software upgrade, it was important for Nokia to come out strong with its next Windows offering and both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 look very promising indeed.
