Peering through binoculars can make an impossibly faraway object look close enough to touch, but with a trade-off: Any little jostle can knock a view out of frame. Most consumer binoculars have a built-in image-stabilization system that uses an accelerometer, a processor, and a small motor to compensate for user movements. But that system only offsets slight jolts, and the processing time required creates a several-millisecond lag. Fraser Optics, a Pennsylvania company that has been supplying binoculars to the military for more than 30 years, has adapted its gyroscope-based mechanical stabilization system into the Mariner, a pair of consumer binoculars that cancels vertical movements of up to 50 degrees without any delay.

The core of the Mariner is a pair of prisms that sit between the front and rear lenses and always remain stable. Fraser engineers mounted the prisms onto a bar, which is attached to the interior housing on two ball bearings. A gyroscopic motor attached to the center of the bar spins at 12,000 rpm. When a user hits a bump, the centrifugal forces of the motor hold the bar steady as the housing moves across the bearings; the prisms—as well as the view—remain almost perfectly still. Using the Mariner, an adventurous birder driving over rocky terrain will be still be able to track a rare species from a mile away.

Orangutan Juga Gemar Gadget

Program Samboja Lestari, di kawasan ekowisata terbatas milik Yayasan Penyelamatan Orangutan Borneo (BOS) di Kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara, Kalimantan Timur, memiliki 224 individu orang utan yang direhabilitasi. Demi rehabilitasi dan rencana pelepasliaran, yang bisa dilihat wisatawan-tanpa menyentuh-hanya orangutan yang tidak mungkin lagi dilepasliarkan, yakni di Pulau 5, salah satu pulau buatan di ekowisata tersebut, Rabu (15/8/2012).

TORONTO, KOMPAS.com - Tak cuma manusia yang gemar gadget. Orangutan, ”saudara tua” manusia, ternyata juga tertarik dengan aplikasi komputer.

Dalam program bernama ”Apps for Apes” atau aplikasi untuk kera, 12 kebun binatang di Amerika Serikat dan Kanada menyediakan komputer tablet iPad untuk digunakan orangutan.

”Ternyata, seperti manusia, mereka suka menyentuh tablet, melihat video pendek, seperti acara tentang alam yang dibawakan Sir David Attenborough, dan melihat gambar hewan atau orangutan lain,” kata Richard Zimmerman, pendiri dan Direktur Orangutan Outreach, organisasi nonprofit berbasis di New York yang menjalankan program tersebut.

Dua kali sepekan orangutan diberi akses pada tablet, yang mereka gunakan 15-30 menit untuk menggunakan berbagai perangkat lunak di dalamnya, tergantung tingkat perhatian mereka. 80% Aplikasi Gadget Sasar Target Anak-anak

Jakarta - Anak-anak menggunakan gadget seperti tablet dan smartphone, bukan lagi suatu keanehan. Di era sekarang semakin banyak anak-anak yang fasih dengan perkembangan teknologi terbaru.

Para developer aplikasi pun melihat peluang ini dan membuat beragam aplikasi yang membidik mereka. Mengutip data terbaru, Marcia Russell, President SchoolDivision SmartyAnts dari Amerika Serikat ini mengatakan, lebih dari 80% aplikasi berbayar populer kategori edukasi menyasar anak-anak.

"Sebanyak 72 persen diantaranya menyasar anak-anak usia pra-sekolah," ujar Marcia saat berbicara membahas English for Kids using technology di pusat kebudayaan Amerika, @america, Pacific Place, Jakarta pekan ini.

Dikatakan Marcia, kegandrungan anak-anak terhadap gadget terus meningkat. Bahkan dalam beberapa waktu ke depan, anak-anak akan semakin menyukai aktivitas berbasis gadget dan komputer.

Namanya anak-anak, mereka sangat menyukai permainan. Tak heran, banyak edukasi untuk anak-anak disampaikan melalui game. Ini pula yang dilakukan website belajar bahasa Inggris Smarty Ants.

Smarty Ants memperkenalkan cara menyenangkan bagi anak-anak untuk belajar menguasai bahasa Inggris melalui permainan dan animasi yang interaktif.

Selain bisa diakses melalui website, tersedia juga aplikasi Smarty Ants untuk tablet dan smartphone. Namun di Indonesia, aplikasi Smarty Ants baru akan dirilis beberapa bulan ke depan.

Over the years we have featured a number of professionally manufactured WiFi cameras, but if you have ever fancied building your own, now is the time.

An open source camera kit called the Internet of Things Camera allows you to build your very own WiFi camera using a Eye-Fi Wi-Fi SD card together with a few other components supplied by Adafruit.

The Adadruit kit consists of a TTL Serial JPEG camera together with a Ardunio parts. All of which can be found over on the Ladyada website.

Once built the tiny WiFi camera can be used to beam still images directly to you for viewing, and can even be used with motion detection software to enable you to setup a simple security camera. Although the site does recommend : “Do not use this as a security camera. This is not a security-grade device.”

Tiny Ubi-Camera Snaps Photos With Your Hands (Video)

Researchers at the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences in Japan, have developed a tiny camera that takes photos using your hands as a frame for the photo, and the device is called the Ubi-Camera.

The video below shows the Ubi-Camera in action, and this tiny camera features a range sensor, and the framing of the photo is determined on the distance between the camera and the person shooting the photos face.

“When you draw a picture or take a photo, you sometimes form a rectangle with your hands to decide the composition. With this camera, you can take a photo using the exact same motion. You attach this device to your index finger, and form a rectangle with your finger like this. You take the photo by using the rectangle as the viewfinder, like this. When you push hard with your thumb, the shutter is pressed.”

The huge Nikon fisheye lens weighs in at 5.2 kg and measures 171mm long and has a diameter of 236mm. Within its design there are 12-elements-in-9-goups optic delivering a picture angle of 220 degrees, and is able to see behind itself due to the massive fisheye effect it creates.

Only a few hundred of the massive Nikon 6mm F2.8 Fisheye lens were ever produced, and were initially created for scientific and industrial usage. But if you fancy adding this to your camera case its now available to purchase for $160k.

Google has recently been expanding its Street View and heading into different areas around the world, they have been mapping more than just your average street recently and now you can create your own version of Street View with this DIY Street View Kit.

The DIY Street View Kit was created by designer Jan Martin, and it comes with everything you would need to create your own custom Street View maps.

The Street View Kit can be carried by hand or mounted to your car and it comes with six sensors and a 30 megapixel camera which can cover at 360 degree by 165 degree field of few.

The kit can generate 7500 x 3750 pixel resolution images, and it captures a photo every two seconds, it also has a built in GPS receiver, and images captured with the kit can be used with custom Street View software.

Flea3 FL3-U3 The Worlds Smallest 4K USB 3.0 Camera

Point Grey has added an new addition to their range in the form of the Flea3 FL3-U3, which is a range of miniature cameras equipped with USB3.0 and a variety of low-cost, high-speed, CMOS image sensors to choose from.

The CMOS image sensors available from the Flea3, range from 1.3 up to 8.8 megapixel with a frame rate of around 21fps. Including Sony’s new IMX1221 Exmor R sensor.

Raspberry Pi Camera Add-on With 5MP Sensor Available By October (Video)

Raspberry Pi has this week announced that a new version of their camera module for the Raspberry Pi mini computer, which was first unveiled back in the middle of May (pictured below). Will be available to purchase before the end of October 2012. Watch the video after the jump to see it in action.

The prototype camera out on which was unveiled back in May consisted of a 14 megapixel sensor, however the new camera module which attaches to the Raspberry Pi mini computer via a ribbon cable will be equipped with a five megapixel sensor.

When the news Raspberry Pi camera module arrives is expected to be priced at around $20-$25, and will provide your Raspberry Pi with a camera capable of capturing both still images and video footage.

Founder of the Raspberry Pi Institute Eben Upton revealed this information at the Raspberry Jam event in Cambridge, England this week.

After A Year In The Pacific Ocean, A Canon EOS Camera & Photographs Are Reunited With Its Owners

After spending more than a year being washed around the Pacific Ocean, a Canon EOS 1000D camera and the photographs contained on its SD card have been reunited with its owner.

As you would expect the Canon EOS camera, pictured below, is no longer working. But the SanDisk Extreme III SD card inside of it was able to be washed, and more than 50 images were recovered. With a date stamp suggesting the camera had been in the salty depths for over a year.

The camera was found during a scuba trip by Markus Thompson, who was diving in Deep Bay just outside Vancouver. After publishing some of the images on Google+, Markus was able to track down the Canon EOS 1000D camera’s original owner. A firefighter and his family from British Columbia and reunite them with their photographs and Canon EOS 1000D paperweight.

Dick Tracy Mobile Phone Watch And GPS Tracker

Anyone looking for a way to keep track of their children, might be interested in this new Dick Tracy phone watch which is now available. That not only does it allow your child to make phone calls, but also includes a GPS tracker which can be used to follow your child’s location.

The Phone watch can be pre-programmed with virtual GPS boundaries that will trigger messages to be sent whenever your child strays over them. Up to 6 waypoints can be added, with entry & exit times from the waypoints being sent to a parents mobile phone number.

Another useful feature of the phone watch is the ability to use it as a virtual lease and connect it to your smartphone. When the watch and child move more than 10 metres away from your smartphone you will then be notified by SMS.

The Dick Tracy watch phone is now available to purchase for around $80 from Chinavasion and comes with parental controls bar/allow incoming and outgoing calls.

YAL Concept Watch Inspired By Tron

Watch makers TokyoFlash are currently taking votes on whether or not to create the YAL Concept Watch, which has been designed by Yoann from France.

The YAL watch as you can probably guess from its design has been inspired by Tron, and uses a number of blue LEDs to tell the time. For example 5 LEDs in the middle, 2 LEDs in the outer branches, 2 more LEDs on the left and PM indicator on = 5h + (2×5)mn + 2 mn + p.m

Yoann explains how Torn music inspired the YAL:
“For a long time, I like to make some graphic creation in my free time and I used to put on it my little logo and “YAL” as a signature. I thought it will be cool to design a watch concept with it ! So, I took my pencil, turned on the Tron music and began to create a watch with my inspiration.”
