Amazon could reveal its first ever Kindle-branded smartphone alongside the Kindle Fire 2 later today.
It seems that Amazon is ready to make a play for the smartphone market with an Android handset launched under the Kindle brand.
According to tech site The Verge: "Amazon is working on a smartphone that runs a variant of the Kindle Fire's Android-based operating system."
The new handset could make an appearance at an Amazon event in LA today, where it is supposed to be showing off its new tablet, the Kindle Fire 2. Whether the new tablet, or indeed any new smartphone will make it over to the UK is still unconfirmed.
The new Kindle smartphone could run a forked version of Ice Cream Sandwich which will mean no Google services from the get-go and navigation possibly handled by Nokia maps.
Either way, it's unlikely this new handset will look to compete with high-end smartphones like the Apple iPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy S3.
Judging from Amazon's previous successes with the likes of the Kindle ebook reader and first generation Kindle Fire, it will opt for an affordable alternative to the top-tier devices.
